Oriel Academy now teaches every core course in six languages: Spanish, Portuguese, Swahili, Hindi, Japanese and English. From this month each language also has weekly office hours, run by a teacher who lives in the region.
What is new
Until June, the 14 core courses were in English, with a few community courses in Spanish and Hindi. Each course now has its own version in every language, written and recorded by people who teach in it, not run through a translation tool. The exercises use local examples: the Swahili course builds a market stall checkout, the Japanese one a train fare card.
The work was paid for with Academy grants of $5k to $20k, to 11 teachers and two small studios. All of the course material is open, and anyone can reuse it with credit.
Half the people at our first workshop gave up on the English course within a week. In Spanish, they get to a working app before they need English at all.
Office hours
Times are local to the teacher's city, except English, which runs on UTC. Every session is online, so you can join from anywhere, and each one is recorded for people who cannot make the time. Bring code that does not work yet: that is what the hour is for.
What comes next
The developer docs are still in English only, and students tell us that is where they get stuck after the courses. We are drafting a proposal to translate them into Spanish and Portuguese first, and it should reach the forum in September. Swahili and Hindi would follow if the first two get used. If you teach and want to run office hours in another language, write to hello@example.com.
